Let’s Have A Look

Is salmon aquaculture suitable for the Falkland Islands?

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) has long acknowledged the importance of diversifying the economy, which included recognising the potential for aquaculture (which includes fish/salmon farming) through successive Island Plans.

Preliminary aquaculture reviews – such as Falkland Conservation’s 2018 study – have recommended a robust assessment of social and environmental factors and gathering key baseline knowledge to inform a science-based decision-making process.

As part of this process, FIG has committed to a public consultation on the potential for fish farming.

Unity Marine – a partnership between the local fishing company Fortuna and the Danish company F-Land Aps – is the first company to express interest in carrying out an environmental impact assessment of commercial-scale salmon farming for FIG to review and consider.

So let’s have a look.
